IDRA Chairman Highlights Integrated Development of Insurance and Capital Markets to Strengthen Investor Confidence

Strengthening investor protection, promoting good governance and ensuring transparency and accountability across the financial sector require coordinated development of the insurance industry and capital market, said Mir Nadia Nivin, Chairman of the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA).

She attended the opening ceremony of World Investor Week 2026, organised by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), as a special guest. The event highlighted the importance of investor protection, institutional accountability and sound governance in building a resilient, transparent and sustainable financial system.

The ceremony was attended by Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister for Finance and Planning, as the chief guest. Tanvir Shahriar Gani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Investment and Capital Market Affairs, attended as the guest of honour. Nazma Mobarak, Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, was present as a special guest. The event was chaired by Masud Khan, Chairman of BSEC.

Investor Protection at the Core of Financial Governance

Investor confidence is fundamental to the stability and sustainable growth of financial markets. Transparent disclosure of information, effective regulatory oversight, responsible corporate practices and institutional accountability are essential to protecting investors and ensuring the integrity of financial transactions.

In the capital market, investors rely on accurate financial disclosures, sound corporate governance and fair market practices. Similarly, insurance policyholders depend on insurers' financial strength, the credibility of their commitments and the timely settlement of legitimate insurance claims.

Against this backdrop, effective insurance regulation and supervision play an important role in safeguarding policyholders' interests and maintaining confidence in the broader financial system. Stronger risk management, transparent claims settlement, responsible business practices and effective consumer protection can help improve public trust in insurance services.

A well-governed insurance sector can also contribute to household financial security, risk protection and long-term economic resilience. Ensuring that insurance companies meet their obligations is therefore important not only for individual policyholders but also for the credibility of the financial sector as a whole.

Complementary Roles of Insurance and Capital Markets

Although the insurance industry and the capital market operate under separate regulatory frameworks, both contribute to the stability of the financial system, the mobilisation of capital and the development of long-term investment.

Insurance companies provide financial protection against risks and may also participate in investment activities, subject to applicable regulations and prudent risk-management requirements. Meanwhile, a well-functioning capital market can facilitate capital formation, expand investment opportunities and support productive economic activities.

Realising these benefits requires responsible investment decisions, robust risk assessment, reliable financial reporting and effective safeguards against conflicts of interest. Coordination among relevant regulatory authorities can further support consistent oversight, sound market practices and stronger institutional accountability.

Financial literacy is equally important. Investors and policyholders need access to clear, reliable information to understand the risks, benefits and obligations associated with financial products. Greater public awareness, effective complaint-resolution mechanisms and measures to prevent fraudulent practices can help protect consumers and strengthen confidence in financial institutions.

Advancing a Transparent and Sustainable Financial System

World Investor Week is an international initiative that promotes investor education, raises awareness of investment-related risks and highlights the importance of investor rights and protection. The initiative also provides an opportunity for financial-market participants and regulators to reinforce responsible investment practices and public confidence in financial markets.

For Bangladesh, further progress in the insurance industry and capital market will depend on effective regulatory enforcement, improved disclosure standards, responsible corporate governance and stronger accountability for irregularities. Expanding digital financial services, strengthening technology-enabled supervision and improving customer-service and grievance-redress mechanisms can also contribute to greater transparency and efficiency.

The participation of IDRA Chairman Mir Nadia Nivin in the opening ceremony of World Investor Week 2026 brought renewed attention to the relationship between insurance-sector governance and investor protection. Closer coordination between the insurance industry and capital market, supported by transparency, accountability and effective regulation, can help build a more resilient and trustworthy financial system.

A financial environment in which investors and policyholders are treated fairly, risks are managed responsibly and institutions are held accountable is essential to sustaining public confidence and supporting Bangladesh's long-term economic development.
